Critical Thinking in Language Learning and Teaching

The Regional English Language Office at the U.S. Embassy, Islamabad is pleased to offer Critical Thinking in Language Learning and Teaching (CT), a 9 week online professional development course for English Language Teachers. This course is designed to introduce participants to and deepen their understanding of the theory and applied use of Critical Thinking principles and practices in the EFL classroom by engaging in the following types of activities.

Critical Thinking in Language Learning and Teaching (CT), delivered by University of Oregon (UO) from March 30th – June 12th 2020.

Course Learning Objectives

• Understand and explain critical thinking concepts and patterns.
• Identify relevant resources to develop and use critical thinking.
• Identify and analyze teaching techniques and materials to incorporate critical thinking in teaching and learning.
• Apply critical thinking to classroom teaching and materials development: redesign and implement instruction and assessment that require critical thinking.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates should be highly motivated in-service English language teachers who are both dedicated to their own professional development and willing to share their knowledge with colleagues. In addition, they should:

• Be an English language professional
• Have strong English language reading and writing skills
• Be a citizen of Pakistan
• Should reside in Pakistan for the entire duration of the course
• Have regular and reliable access to high-speed internet connection
• Be able to spend 10 to 12 hours online each week for the duration of the 9-week course

Course Overview 

This course is designed to introduce participants to and deepen their understanding of the theory and applied use of Critical Thinking principles and practices in the EFL classroom by engaging in the following types of activities.

  • Read and discuss professional information and articles to gain a deeper understanding of critical thinking and its development in language pedagogy.
  • Identify the suitability of course readings to course assignments and apply content as appropriate.
  • Interact with colleagues regionally and internationally who share similar pedagogical interests.  Participants regularly evaluate each other’s contributions, question, and build on each other’s ideas.
  • Work on diverse tasks and exercises, and create classroom projects that demonstrate an understanding of course topics.
  • Adapt and enhance culturally and age appropriate curriculum materials to include critical thinking development and practice for a local context.
  • Critically reflect on others’ and one’s own work as well as one’s own critical thinking.

 Description of Final Project

All 10-week courses require participants to complete a final project.

Following is a short description of the 3-part project for this course.

Part 1:  Redesigning a lesson plan to include more critical thinking instruction: participants work individually to redesign a lesson they have submitted early in the course. The redesign should include explicit critical thinking objectives and activities that support students’ use of various critical thinking strategies.

Part 2:  Designing assessment to measure critical thinking lesson objectives:  participants work individually to design assessment of the critical thinking students practice in the lesson plan (part 1).

Part 3:  Action plan which focuses on each participant’s goals to further apply both personal and professional critical thinking development as well as its development/dissemination within the professional sphere:  each participant draws up an action plan with 2 goals that illustrate his/her intentions related to developing his/her own CT skills and/or sharing the learning from this course with colleagues in their own educational setting and beyond.

English Language Expo 2020

 The Regional English Language Office (RELO Pakistan) at the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Islamabad is pleased to announce ‘English Language Expo 2020,’ to be held in Karachi on January 18, 2020. The conference, based on the theme ‘Digital Innovations in English Language Teaching and Learning,’ aims to promote 21st Century teaching and learning tools & techniques, emphasize the importance of digitalization in the world of teaching, and provide networking opportunities to English language teaching professionals. The sessions will focus on the introduction of various methodologies and digital tools to facilitate English language learning and the importance of transforming language classrooms into global classrooms.

The conference will provide ELTs an opportunity to:

  • Attend 30+ sessions conducted by E-Teacher alumni and guest speakers.
  • Learn about digital innovations in English Language Teaching and Learning.
  • Strengthen the local educational community by networking with English language professionals from different institutions and regions.


The conference will be open to experienced and novice English language professionals, potential English language teachers and university students from related disciplines. These may include:

Conference Overview

The Regional English Language Office (RELO) at the U.S. Embassy Islamabad, in collaboration with IREX and Evolution, is pleased to announce the TEA Alumni Conference’19 from April 1 – April 12, 2019 in Islamabad. Fifty TEA alumni from across Pakistan will have an opportunity to participate in a two-week extensive professional development workshop that aims to:

  • Strengthen people-to-people ties between the United States and Pakistan through engagement in a wide range of activities promoting exchange of experience, information and expertise.
  • Build capacity of local educational community of Pakistan through intensive professional development offered by American specialists and local trainers.
  • Create an active network of TEA Alumni in Pakistan harnessing alumni leadership and initiating chapter activities such as special interest groups.
  • Present their learning with other participants through conducting workshops, presentations and/or panel discussions.

Who Can Apply?

Applicant must:

  • Be an alumnus of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Program for Pakistan (all cohorts).
  • Be currently living in Pakistan.
  • Be willing to stay in Islamabad for the two-week residential conference.
  • Be prepared to share their course learning and network with other conference participants.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Be actively engaged within community since completing the TEA Program for Pakistan.

Please note: All participants will be required to stay at the conference venue, attend sessions and participate in all academic and extra-curricular activities for the entire duration of the conference i.e. from April 1 – April 12, 2019. Partial participation is not accepted.


  • Round-trip travel from your city of residence to the conference venue in Islamabad. The arrangements will be by economy air or road, considering the distance of travel. No stipend will be provided for en route meals.
  • Accommodation and three meals a day for the entire duration of the conference.
  • Extensive professional development opportunity offered by American specialists and local trainers.
  • Arrangement of enhancement activities such as site-seeing in Islamabad to explore the culture aspect and provide alumni a chance to network with each other through excursions.
  • Opportunity to conduct workshop/presentation for peer participants.

Selection Criteria ( not in order of importance):

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching in the field of secondary education through community engagement;
  • Demonstrated leadership potential by initiating projects in local community;
  • Willingness to network with peer TEA Pakistan alumni to initiate activities to uplift the educational system in Pakistan;
  • Willingness to work with a diverse group of TEA alumni from across Pakistan with no discrimination to race, color, ethnicity, appearance and religion.
  • Willingness and capacity to work and live collaboratively with peers to foster a positive learning community for professional development.
